New Town is the fourth and last town that arose in the Middle Ages. Charles IV. found it in 1348. His plans about its extent were so generous that it was covered with buildings in the 19th century. Until present time a network of streets connected to three main marketplaces remained. One of the marketplaces called Wenceslas Square (former “Horse Market”) is a centre of the city. Wenceslas Square is a synonym to Prague. This former horse market, founded by Charles IV. in 1348, is a business centre of the New Town. If you get off at the stop “Muzeum” of the subway (line A or C), you will appear on the upper part of the square. There you can see a statue of St. Wenceslas on a horse and holy patrons of Czech lands: St. Ludmila, St. Anezka, St. Vojtech and St. Prokop. The statue was made by J. V. Myslbek in the 19th century. Then you can see the National Museum, beside of it a building of the Radio Free Europe and further a house of the State Opera. If you got off at the stop “Mustek” (line A or B) in the lower part, you could get to Na Prikope Street. It used to be a part of fortifications; nowadays many worldwide famous shops are there.

Architect Josef Schulz constructed this Neorenaissance building between years 1885 and 1890. The National Museum involves voluminous collections.

This Neorenaissance building was constructed between years 1868 and 1881 mostly financed by money collected from Czechs of all classes in all the country. Architects were J. Zitek and J. Schulz. However in 1881 a great fire burst out and destroyed a big part of the building. After reconstruction it was opened in 1883. The theatre was decorated by Czech top artists. A curtain “Unselfishness of the Nation at the Construction of the National Theatre” was created according to design of V. Hynais. You can go there to see drama, opera or ballet.

This nice and calm place on a rocky hill above the Vltava used to be a residence of Czech dukes of Premyslid dynasty. You can see remains of their palace in Vysehrad Park. St. Martin Rotunda reminds of passed times, too. Cemetery called “Slavin” lies at St. Peter and St. Paul Church. There tombs of prestigious Czech scientists, artists and patrons are, e.g. scientist J. E. Purkyne, composers A. Dvorak and B. Smetana. Walking along the fortification you can enjoy almost all Prague in a bird's eye view.

A former cloister of Benedictine order was constructed in the second half of the 14th century. Two modern towers that dominate the building, were finished in 1967.
